Some children may need help in hearing the sounds in words. Clapping syllables can help the child to think about the order of sounds in spoken words, and help the child to analyze a new word he wants to say. Hearing big chunks is easier for a child especially in one or two syllable words he knows well. Names are some of the easiest words to start with. Just ask the child to say and clap the parts he can hear. Start with one or two syllable words and later move to three or four syllables.
